JIM RATTENBURY

Jim Rattenbury (British, b.1947) is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, painting, and installation. His creative process begins with the materials themselves, often natural or chemically altered, which guide the evolution of each piece. Rather than starting with a fixed idea, Rattenbury allows the work to emerge organically, embracing experimentation and the element of surprise.

Play and curiosity are central to his practice, driving him to explore questions like: “What would happen if…?” His references span from ancient archaeology to astrophysics, and his aim is to create pieces that resonate with the viewer through a sense of quiet mystery and poetic tension.

"I make sculptures, paintings, and installations by experimenting with materials and letting them lead the way. Natural and chemical processes often shape what the work becomes, I rarely know where it's going when I start. For me, play is essential. I want to be surprised.

I'm influenced by everything from archaeology to astrophysics, but mostly I follow my curiosity. What would happen if...? That’s usually where it all begins.

I hope the work speaks through a kind of quiet mystery, something you feel more than you understand."
