"In the wake of the pandemic, like many creatives, I was forced to experiment with new forms of expression. For me, it all began with the scarcity of materials to make sculpture. With no specialized stores open, I pushed myself every day to freely channel my emotions using only what I had at hand: pencil and paper.

Disturbed by the global health crisis, I tried to resist expressing anger, sadness, or depression. Instead, I focused on reflecting the most honest state of my frustration and helplessness at being unable to act. Through this process, I finally managed to capture my feelings in my drawings."

"A raíz de la pandemia, como muchos creativos, me vi obligada a experimentar con nuevas formas de expresión. Para mí, todo comenzó con la escasez de materiales para hacer escultura. Al no haber tiendas especializadas abiertas, me obligué a diario a canalizar libremente mis emociones utilizando únicamente lo que tenía a mano: lápiz y papel.

Perturbada por la crisis sanitaria global, traté de resistirme a expresar ira, tristeza o depresión. En cambio, me concentré en reflejar el estado más honesto de mi frustración e impotencia al no poder actuar. A través de este proceso, finalmente logré capturar mis sentimientos en mis dibujos."

Mariko Kumon, artista japonesa nacida en Fukuoka, reside en Barcelona, España. Graduada en Matemáticas Aplicadas por la Universidad de Fukuoka, hace casi dos décadas transformó su vida al dedicarse al arte. Estudió fundición y escultura en la Escuela Superior de Diseño y Arte La Llotja de Barcelona, donde desarrolló un especial interés por las instalaciones. Además, comercializa una pequeña línea de joyería en el Museo Joan Miró.

Para Kumon, la escultura es su forma de expresión principal, ya que le permite plasmar la vida con profundas emociones. Dependiendo del momento y del estado del proceso creativo, juega intuitivamente con la espontaneidad y la expresividad. En su obra, la línea, transformada en alambre, representa sus ideas y pensamientos, curvándose, torciéndose y ondulando para encontrar su propio espacio desde el interior.

Estas líneas de fuerza evocadoras transmiten estados de ánimo, construyendo un lenguaje personal que refleja su visión artística. Su trabajo invita a explorar la conexión entre forma, emoción y espacio, estableciendo un diálogo íntimo con el espectador.

Mariko Kumon is a Japanese artist who lives in Barcelona, Spain. She graduated in applied mathematics from  Fukuoka university in Japan. Almost twenty years ago she changed her life and began to study art. Studied casting and sculpture at the La Llotja Superior School of Design and Art in Barcelona and became particularly interested in creating installations.  She sells a small line of jewelry at the Joan Miró Museum.

For her, sculpture is the most common form of expression as it allows her to describe life with deep emotions. Depending on the moment and state of the creative process, she intuitively plays with spontaneity and expression. Also for her, the line transmuted into wire is the personal representation of her ideas and thoughts. A line that, curving, twisting and undulating, seeks to find its own space from the inside.

These evocative lines of force convey states of mind, building a personal visual language that reflects her artistic vision. Her work invites an exploration of the connection between form, emotion, and space, establishing an intimate dialogue with the viewer.
